- What kind of coverage do you want? Natural, Corrective, Flawless? If you have a good complexion already, then a powder foundation will probably be the best choice for you....it is a lightweight coverage but enough to just evenly blend your skin. If you have a lot of red spots on your face or a lot of blemishes that you would like to hide, then a cream or liquid foundation along with a powder will cover them up nicely. Also, a green primer (Revlon has a great one) will help to counteract the red spots which will help the foundation cover it a lot better. If you are going for a more flawless look then a cream or liquid foundation with maximum coverage will help even out the skin tone and give you a perfected look. Always finish any cream or liquid foundation with a powder!
- What skin type do you have? Dry, Oily or Combination? A lot of makeup brands will have different foundations for different types of skin....If you have oily skin, do not use a foundation for dry skin. It will add even more shine and oil to your face. If you have dry skin, do not use a foundation for oily skin. It will cause premature aging because it is like "dehydration" for your skin. A combination skin type can use either kind. Always begin your foundation with a light facial moisturizer though....even if you have oily skin!
Depending on what results you want from your makeup, will depend on what color of foundation to use. Look at this picture for example:
She wanted to add color to her face....so we used a foundation that initially matched her skin color....but then we added a powder that was 2 shades darker, and a bronzer on her cheeks, forehead, chin and top of the nose. And it blended perfectly! It even looks like it is the natural color of her skin.
As for me....my face is very fair, but the rest of my body is very tan because I don't ever tan my face ( I try to prevent fine line and wrinkles!) so I use a light colored foundation but then I use a powder and bronzer to add that natural tan to my face. It works like a charm and no one knows the difference!
If you are still having a hard time choosing the right color, come to me and I'll help you out! If you don't live near me, then I would recommend going to your nearest mall and finding a place like Sephora or MAC or even some Victoria's Secret's, that will let you sample their foundations! I also believe that Avon and Mary Kay representatives can get you samples, so you can choose the best shade for you. But don't quote me on that! It's worth a try to ask though!
Leave me comments or questions if you have any!!!!;)

So where do I find the shimmer eye shadow that you talked about in your post on natural looking makeup? Can I use bronzer instead of blush, and where should I apply it so it looks natural and blends in? Also, how do you know if you should go a couple of shades darker in the powder foundation? Do you apply that all over the top of the liquid foundation?
ReplyDeleteI get my shimmer eye shadows from just about anywhere!! I REALLY like the ones from Charlotte Russe and also Claire's Icing has some great ones too. I am not sure if they have any of those where you live but if not, Wal-Mart has some too! Just look for eyeshadow that has a sort of sparkly shimmer to it!
ReplyDeleteOkay now for your other questions....I use an apricot pink for my blush...it almost looks like a bronzer but it still adds that natural color to your face! I usually put bronzer on the middle of my forehead, the center of my nose, underneath my cheekbones to slim my face (you can find where to put it by sucking your cheeks in) and also a little on my chin. Physician's Formula (at walmart) has a great bronzer....it has little bead/pearl looking things with different colors. It helps to blend the colors better!
You should only go darker with your foundation if it matches the rest of your body....if your body is darker than your face...then I would definitely match your foundation with it by going some shades darker. But if you just have fair skin all over then stay away from going darker in your face. If you have fair skin all over, then find a liquid shade that matches your skin and get a powder that is just a teeny bit darker...because powder always goes on a bit lighter than it looks. Also, for fair skin, only use a little bit of bronzer. Maybe even just underneath your cheekbones and no where else. And yes...you apply powder over the foundation....never the other way around!
Most importantly.....just practice!!!! It takes time to get used to it. You know what looks good on you, so just practice until you get the look you want!;) and I am always here to answer questions!!!
Now I just have a question about mascara and eye liner. What colors should I go for if I just want a natural look, but still eye enhancing?
ReplyDeleteI personally like black mascara and black eyeliner for all types of looks, but if you aren't used to wearing eye makeup then I would start out with a lighter color like brown. You can use a brown eyeliner which would make your blue eyes stand out. And would look really pretty with a gold/brown eyeshadow:)
ReplyDeleteHey AnJanae! So I went and bought some new makeup today and finally got the right color of foundation, thanks to you! It looked weird right after I put it on because it actually blended with my face better, lol! Thanks for all of the makeup tips! Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!!!! I need to make another post soon! I am glad that it helps, especially when you live so far away!
